Honey and Knives - Bellingen Based Folkgrass

Bellingen based Honey & Knives are a 5-piece folkgrass band driven by vocal harmonies and a visceral energy. Based in Bellingen, they have featured at various folk festivals over the past four years, including Woodford, Mullum, Dorrigo, Illawarra & Cygnet. The band is known for mixing raw truths with a rollicking good time and innate ability to coordinate clothing for visually spectacular results.

The band is wildly excited to have released their second studio album, ‘Who Are You’. Launched at the Bellingen Memorial Hall with a sell-out concert in November 2017, the band has been on the road sharing the music ever since! Two years of creative fervour, passion and hard work has resulted is an ambitious album full of heart, warmth & humour. The fifteen tracks on 'Who Are You' span the familiar genres of folk, bluegrass and country, but also explores jazz, soul, blues and celtic influences.

Absolutely world class harmonies... you need to see this band... excellent

At first listen it may seem as though Honey & Knives are another Aussie string band following the timeless traditions of American Bluegrass music. Don’t get me wrong, the influence is there, but they are hitching no rides. Their debut album, ‘You Don’t Make The Rules’ pays respectful consideration to the ‘rules’ of Bluegrass, but it’s on their terms and with a wonderfully authentic Australian attitude and swagger. The stark and honest production matches the genuine and quite personal lyrical content. From the sultry and sinister ‘Sinner’ to the brash and ballsy title track through to the beautifully melodic duet ‘Mama’, the album ebbs and flows, bombards and retreats. Vocalists Toke and Jacquie weave superb harmonies, their symbiotic voices as powerful as they are gentle and evocative. Tastefully implementing and omitting the full spectrum of bluegrass and old-time instrumentation provides the perfect platform for a dynamic band and an exceptionally musical album.
